Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material which has been regularly used in buildings since the 1950’s until the late 1990’s.
Asbestos was widely used as an insulation and fire proofing solution and was found in products such as ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, sprayed coatings and garage roof tiles.
Asbestos fibres are microscopic and are easily inhaled. Once inhaled, the fibres cling to the respiratory system, including the lining of the lungs and inner cavity tissue. As asbestos fibres are rigid, they become lodged in the soft internal tissue of the respiratory system and are not easily expelled the body. As a result, exposure to asbestos can result in asbestosis.
